Bulgaria celebrates Friday, May 6, the Day of Saint George the Victorious, and the Day of the Bulgarian Army.

May 6 was officially pronounced as the Day of the Bulgarian Army on January 9, 1880, shortly after the establishment of the country's military with a decree of Knyaz Alexander Battenberg.

Bulgaria Commemorates 136 Years of April Uprising

The town of Panagyurishte in central Bulgaria is the focal point Tuesday of commemorations of the 136th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising for the liberation of Bulgaria.

President Rosen Plevneliev, Parliament Chair Tsetska Tsacheva and other high-ranking statesperson are set to visit Panagyurishte, one of the centers of the Uprising, to take part in the official celebrations Tuesday evening.

Bulgarian Archeologists Discover Apollonia's Eastern Gate

Bulgarian archeologists made a breakthrough discovery in the ancient Black Sea town of Sozopol – they found the long-sought East Gate of Apollonia Pontica.

The precious discovery had been located underneath illegal shacks selling food and beverages in the center of the town. It will allow scientists to recover all fortification systems of the ancient city in their original state. This, in turn, will attract more tourists from the country and Europe.
