73 Cities in Bulgaria to Join Earth Hour 2012

At least seventy three cities and towns across Bulgaria will turn off the lights at their main buildings to join the Earth Hour initiative, the environment group WWF announced.

Earth Hour will be held in Bulgaria on Saturday, March 30, between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm, when electric lights will be shut down as a reminder about climate change and the need to reduce our imprint. Street lighting will be kept on for safety reasons.

Celebrated on March 1, Baba Marta (Grandma March) is believed to be a feisty lady who always seems to be grudging at her two brothers, while the sun only comes out when she smiles.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors on Wednesday, February 1, the Day of Saint Trifon, the patron of vine-growers, wine-producers and tavern-keepers.

The holiday is widely known in Bulgaria as Trifon Zarezan - from the Bulgarian verb "zariazvam" meaning to prune vines.

Bulgaria's Largest Kukeri Festival Kicks off in Pernik

The 21st edition of Bulgaria's largest and most impressive "Kukeri" event – the Surva Festival – kicked off in the western city of Pernik on Saturday.

Thousands of "kukeri", or mummers, a beloved Bulgarian folklore tradition with roots from Ancient Thrace, have gathered for the weekend event. They will have processions in downtown Pernik on Saturday and Sunday.

Bulgarians Honor St Anthony to Scare off Diseases

The Bulgarian Orthodox Churchy honors Tuesday the memory of the Venerable Anthony the Great, on the holiday called Antonovden.

Anthony was born in about 250 AD in Egypt. During his life he spent 20 years in complete solitude in the desert. Sick and suffering people came to him for help.
